Techie builds air-car! Refuses commercialization

Bangalore: Kanak Gogoi, a 12th passed entrepreneur from Guwahati, has over a dozen innovations, from gravity-operated bicycle to a car which can run on air. But he regrets the government's negligence towards scientific innovations, and refuses to commercialize any of his creations.

Gogoi said, "Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) offered to build a fully furnished lab for me in Guwahati. The Chief Minister had granted me about 1.6 acres of land in 2007, but the file is still lying untouched at the local administrative office."


Talking about slow moving files, another of Gogoi's invention is the speed breaker that can generate electricity simply when vehicles pass over it. Gogoi explains that a ramp under the speed breaker would absorb the static energy produced by the sheer mass of the vehicle and convert it into kinetic energy. This is, in turn, transferred into electricity and stored in a battery cell. A vehicle weighing one tonne can create electricity equivalent to one kilowatt.

When Gogoi started the journey, he had two options; pay up his children's school fees or spend the money for his scientific innovations. He opted for the latter. In the past 13 years, he has spent Rs.1.5 crore (Rs.15 million) of his own money to satisfy his scientific and engineering curiosities, but steadfastly refuses to commercialize any of them and blames the government for not promoting scientific innovations, although only a few years ago he was making a hand-to-mouth existence.

Felicitated by the President of India last week for his achievements, 47-year old Gogoi is a celebrity in Guwahati's scientific and engineering circles. He has developed his penchant for creating extraordinary things from ordinary materials used for day-to-day activities during his younger days.

"However, I have never received a single rupee in profit for any of my work and I will never venture to commercialize them on my own. But if anybody is willing, he is free to make use of my innovations for the greater good of the society," Gogoi told PTI.

Among his innovations are a solar hybrid car, whose 320 watt battery is charged by solar panels and is powered by a 100cc engine. Another car that Gogoi made from integration of motorcycle and Maruti 800 engines, runs on air energy powered by a hand glider and can reach a maximum speed of 120 km per hour.

Gogoi, however, has not bothered to apply for intellectual property rights (IPR) for any of his innovations, although they have cost Rs.1.5 crore of his own money. "When anybody talks about things like IPR or patents, it is generally assumed that the person must be a Ph.D or DLitt. Who will think of an undergraduate as a genuine and worthy innovator? Besides, paperwork of the kind that is required for patent filing has always been an anathema for me," said Gogoi.

In fact it is the National Innovation Foundation, headed by noted scientist Raghunath A Mashelkar that applied for a patent on Gogoi's behalf for his gravity operated cycle, which converts gravitational force released by pedaling of the cycle into kinetic energy.

Creative Thinking-

There are 5 stages in creative thinking process-

* The Quick-Fire Mind Map Burst

* First Reconstruction and Revision

* Incubation

* Second Reconstruction and Revision

* The Final Stage

The Quick- Fire Mind Map Burst – Begin by drawing a stimulating central image that represents the generic topic of interest. Your image should be placed in the centre of a large blank page, and from it should radiate every idea that comes into your mind on that subject. For about 20 minutes you should let the ideas flow as fast as possible. Having to work at speed unchains your brain from habitual thinking patterns, and encourages new ideas. Many of these new ideas may at first seem absurd, however do not disregard these ideas as they often hold the keys to new perspectives and breaking old habits.

First Reconstruction and Revision – Have a short break, allowing your brain to rest and begin to integrate the ideas generated so far. Then make a new Mind Map, in which you identify the major branches, categorizing, building up hierarchies and finding new associations between your preliminary ideas. It may become noticeable that similar or identical concepts are present in several different places of your Mind Map. These should not be dismissed as unnecessary repetitions as they are fundamentally “different” in that they are attached to different branches. These peripheral repetitions reflect the underlying importance of ideas which are buried deep with your store of knowledge but which actually influence every aspect of your thinking. Following your brain’s flow, the Mind Map explores your current thought in this new centre to replace the old. In due course this new centre will itself be placed by a new and more advanced concept. The Mind Map therefore aids reflects intellectual exploration and growth.

Incubation-Sudden creative realisations often come when the brain is relaxed such as sleeping, day dreaming and running. This is because such states of mind allow the radiant thinking process to spread to the farthest reaches of the brain, increasing the probability of mental breakthroughs.

Second Reconstruction and Revision- After incubation your brain will have a fresh perception on your first and second Mind Maps, so it will be useful to do another quick fire Mind Map burst. During this reconstruction stage you will need to consider all the information gathered and integrated in stages 1, 2 and 3 in orders to make a comprehensive final Mind Map.

The Final Stage- You now need to search for the solution, decision, or realization which was your original creative goal. This often involves linking elements in your Mind Map, leading to major new insights and breakthroughs.

With the introduction of computer based Mind Mapping in the last couple of years, Mind Mapping has become even easier. Mind Mapping software such as Tony Buzan’s iMindMap utilizes the true principles of Mind Mapping and duplicate the non-linear thinking process of the brain, creating an explosion in creativity, innovation and knowledge sharing. World Population

The term world population commonly refers to the total number of living humans on Earth at a given time. As of 16 August 2009, the Earth's population is estimated by the United States Census Bureau to be 6.778 billion.

Cloud Computing

Dell, IBM, Sun, Microsoft, Amazon and many others are all doing it this year. Cloud computing is a type of computing that is comparable to grid computing, relies on sharing computing resources rather than having local servers or personal devices to handle applications. The goal of cloud computing is to apply traditionalsupercomputing power (normally used by military and research facilities) to perform tens of trillions of computations per second.

To do this, Cloud computing networks large groups of servers, usually those with low-cost consumer PC technology, with specialized connections to spread data-processing chores across them. This shared IT infrastructure contains large pools of systems that are linked together. Often, virtualization techniques are used to maximize the power of cloud computing.

There are many people out there who believe the term cloud computing is just another buzzword that is used to describe too many technologies, making it confusing to many. The term Cloud computing has been used to mean grid computing, utility computing, software as a service, Internet-based applications, autonomic computing, peer-to-peer computing and remote processing. When most people use the term, they may have one of these ideas in mind, but the listener might be thinking about something else.

Regardless if you share this view or not, you're bound to hear more on cloud computing in the coming year.

The company built on the notion of network computing finally gets into the hot buzzword technology of 2008. But will it help reverse Sun's fortunes?

Legal experts say the company is liable to lose the first time it tries to enforce the trademark.

The "cloud computing" buzzword has got to go. It's simply too confusing, misleading, redundant and dangerous.

4G

4G, which is short for fourth generation, is an ITU specification that is currently being developed for broadband mobile capabilities. 4G technologies would enable IP-based voice, data and streaming multimedia at higher speeds, compared to 3G.

This IP-based and packet-switched evolution of 3G technologies (such as WCDMA, HSDPA, CDMA2000 and EVDO) that uses voice communications. A number of technologies considered to be 4G standards include Long Term Evolution (LTE), Ultra Mobile Broadband (UMB) and the IEEE 802.16 (WiMax) standard.

Some consider 2008 to be the unofficial start to the 4G era, as Sprint ups efforts to create a nationwide WiMAX network with its $14.5 billion Clearwire joint venture, however with so much attention being given to WiMAX, one misconception out there right now that 4G is WiMAX, and that is not true. There is, in fact, no definition of 4G yet, but there are goals that the ITU is working towards.

Three major operators in the Indian subcontinent have already begun WiMAX 16e rollouts - Tata Communications and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL), the incumbent, in India, and Wateen Telecom in Pakistan.

The turbulent economy may slow down Sprint's closely watched efforts to create a nationwide WiMAX network.

In the race to 4G that's heating up between two competing wireless networking standards, it would be foolish to dismiss the Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard as the longshot against its better-known rival, WiMAX.

Confusion

Some times we do not understand many things, which is quite natural. But what is most important is to open our thoughts ,, accepting the new facts,, adopting the changes,, we can make a difference.
There are and will be problems, sometimes more than what we expect but then we also need them to improvise ourselves.

The real problems is to understand "me"
ME , that comes with a pride, comes with a fear, comes with a glory, comes with an answer.
But do we really understand what "ME" actually is !!!
I guess no, we live in a concrete wall of our false believe about "ME", do we ever sit and analysed what "ME" is and what "ME" can be.

As few of my Friends say.."ME" is a brand.. yes it is. but what am saying is - we need to Position the Brand well , value it, frame it and stand .


Line of the day - " if Common sense is Common, why is it not found commonly in all " ???

Relation is relative term to Collection, sounds unfamiliar !!! well yes, the most difficult party to negotiate, the most difficult client to maintain, the most difficult puzzle to understand. But a the organization what every single entity of the human society have formed according to their own norms.
